Introducing Qamar 14
Founded in 2006, Qamar14 is the collective name for a group of teachers and performers
of Middle Eastern and North African dance who came together to try and make the impossible possible. We wanted to bring the finest dance stars to Yorkshire to teach
and share their invaluable knowledge and skills and we wanted them to really enjoy their time with us and their students. We also wanted to put on professional shows so that everyone could see and experience the beauty, power and passion of Arabic dance - and not just dancers and dance-students but their families and friends, and the general public too. We wanted our shows to be a platform for up-and-coming dancers and the very best Yorkshire performance groups, and to give many of them their first ever experience
of working with theatre audiences, stage-lighting, dressing rooms, make-up,
and lightning costume changes. And we wanted live music, story-telling,
easy access to information, the very best technical equipment....
Oh, we wanted all sorts of things so we rolled up our sequinned sleeves and set to work.
We knew we'd always have a shoestring budget, we knew we'd be taking on a lot of work, and we knew we'd have to start small. We also knew we'd have to win
the support and trust of the Yorkshire bellydance community if we were to put even more dates into an already crowded diary, and we'd have to persuade all sorts of people
that we really could do something rather special and very different...
Well, we must be doing something right - because we're still here!
We're Qamar14 and we like to think we make magic
- but we couldn't do it without all of you!
